Introducing The In-Betweeners

Our first In-Betweeners meetup started on a whim.

A few weeks before our first event, I’d gone to a presentation about AI tools, and at one point made a joke about which tool we should use to find jobs, apply, and respond to the inevitable rejection emails on our behalf. With light laughter from the other attendees, I realized about half the room were in the similar boat of either trying to figure out, or were taking a leap of faith into what was next.

After the talk I chatted with a few people (literally at the water cooler), and found those conversations refreshingly honest and relaxed. Those engagements sparked the idea to create a new group for people (including myself), in that liminal “In-Between” space.

I posted our first event on Eventship and was surprised to hit the RSVP cap within the first week. I’m more of a one-on-one, behind the scenes person, and forced myself to step out of my comfort zone during the event to get everyone’s attention to make introductions. I wanted everyone to have an opportunity to share a little about themselves, so we could connect with more than just the few people we might happen to stand or sit next to. That simple exercise put everyone on equal footing and set the stage for meaningful conversations for the remainder of the event.

A number of people came up afterwards to say how relaxed they felt, and that they’d made some great new connections. That made me think there might be something here to build on, and that maybe I should embrace this whole “In-Between” thing, and focus some time and energy towards helping others in a similar space.
